Not good.

The Kansas City Chiefs are officially eliminated from playoff contention but to make matters worse, Patrick Mahomes might have suffered an injury that could sideline him for the rest of the season. Mahomes hurt his knee late in the loss to the Chargers and it immediately didn't look like good news as he was down for quite a while.

Andy Reid spoke to the media following the loss and told reporters that the injury "didn't look good". An MRI will be done to "determine the security", per Ian Rapoport but this certainly makes it sound as though Mahomes could miss some time. The whole quote from Reid was "I don't know, but I mean, it didn't look good. You guys saw it. We'll just see where it goes."

Given that the Chiefs officially have nothing to play for and, at this point losing helps their draft stock, Mahomes needs to be done for the year. That was going to be something Chiefs fans called for regardless of the injury but now that he's injured and it doesn't look good according to Reid, yeah, time to pull the plug there and let Gardner Minshew do his thing.

At this point, the injury doesn't impact this season much, as the Chiefs aren't going to play in the postseason. It could, however, impact the Chiefs if Mahomes' injury is severe enough that he has to have surgery in the offseason and/or miss some time in 2026. This team can't afford to not have their franchise quarterback when the 2026 season begins but if the injury is severe enough, that could be a sad reality they're dealing with.

It has been a season filled with injuries and unfortunately, the injury bug got to Mahomes as well. Let's just hope he's okay and can help this team bounce back in 2026.
