Sports betting has become more and more popular. Throughout the course of Super Bowl history, betting and general contest-themed games have been a staple for those watching the biggest NFL game of the season. Super Bowl LIX offers no shortage of options worth betting on this Sunday. However, there are a few unique and weird categories to choose from.
Which prop bets stand out as the most interesting for those focused on items surrounding the game, and not necessarily the action on the field? Here are some quirky ones that grab headlines this year.
Quirky prop bet #1: Travis Kelce proposing to Taylor Swift
The world was introduced to the Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift relationship last year. She was in attendance for numerous games at Arrowhead Stadium over the last two years. The Super Bowl LVIII broadcast showed her during crunch time as the Chiefs were driving. And in each of the last two years, Swift has been able to celebrate on the field after an AFC Championship Game victory with Kelce.
Bettors have the opportunity to wager on a specific moment possibly happening after Super Bowl LIX. If Kansas City wins, some believe that Kelce may propose to Swift on the field. Via FanDuel in Ontario, Canada, bettors have the chance to bet on the tight end proposing. Odds sit at +750 of it taking place and -1500 of no proposal occurring. Oddsmakers believe it will be highly unlikely that a proposal will take place. Though, it would not be surprising to see many bettors still take the side of 'yes'.
Quirky prop bet #2: Superdome power outage
There have been numerous Super Bowl matchups in the city of New Orleans. The last time that city hosted the big game before Sunday was Super Bowl XLVII between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. A close finish and the battle of John and Jim Harbaugh as brothers competing as opposing head coaches were part of why that Super Bowl was memorable. However, the lights going out and causing a lengthy delay during play were a rare sight, creating a lasting memory in Super Bowl history.
With this being the first Super Bowl in New Orleans since then, the odds of that happening again are highly unlikely. Yet, it makes for an interesting talking point among bettors. According to The Athletic, there were not currently any props available on that option a few days ago. The prop was available last year for a power outage inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. They mention the prop sat at +1600 for yes and -15000 for no for that particular betting option in Super Bowl LVIII.
Quirky prop bet #3: Players/coaches crying during National Anthem
Betting involving the National Anthem has been around for a while in Super Bowl history. The over/under on the length of the National Anthem has been a popular betting pick for most viewers. But for other betting options surrounding that moment, you can wager on items surrounding players and coaches from each team.
Via World Sports Network, you can bet on the first player being shown during the National Anthem. Quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes (-200) and Jalen Hurts (+150) hold two of the shorter odds among players. Among head coaches, Andy Reid (-150 odds) is the favorite to be shown first during the National Anthem compared to Nick Sirianni (+115 odds). Sirianni was notably seen crying during the anthem two years ago.
Crying during the National Anthem is also an available betting trend. World Sports Network shows that it is -500 odds that a player or coach will cry during the National Anthem. They list the option of no at +330 odds. Chris Jones has been shown crying during the anthem in each of the last two playoff games for Kansas City. Chiefs fans have joked that seeing that before kickoff will lead to a great finish for their favorite team.
