The Kansas City Chiefs have reached their bye week. It’s a chance for wide receivers to rehab their hamstrings, for left tackles to rest their backs and for Chiefs fans to sit back, relax, and watch a carefree weekend of football.
But with Kansas City out of action, which teams should Chiefs Kingdom be rooting for? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.
A division rival you should be cheering for, a primetime matchup that could impact Kansas City’s playoff seeding, a rival that I always want to lose, and an ultimate underdog to support, these are the four teams you should consider rooting for this weekend.
1. Los Angeles Chargers to beat the Denver Broncos
Hang on, the Los Angeles Chargers? Don’t we kinda hate those guys? Of course, but this weekend is a classic "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" situation. Los Angeles will play the Denver Broncos on Sunday, and we hate them even more.
The Broncos are the reigning AFC West champions, but they are 2-2 to start the season and have looked shaky at times. A loss to the Chargers would put them even further back in the division race and heap more pressure on a team that (foolishly) thought it was the best in the AFC.
Also, the Chiefs will play the Chargers in Week 6. If LA can get its first win of the season, that might put some things on tape that Kansas City can better prepare for, giving the Chiefs a better chance of moving to 5-0.
A result that helps the Chiefs, hurts a division rival and gets under the skin of an arrogant fan base? Count me in on that.
2. Jacksonville Jaguars to beat the Philadelphia Eagles
This one is personal to me, but I’ve never really liked this iteration of the Philadelphia Eagles. They beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX to deny Kansas City a three-peat, and not gonna lie, I still resent them for that. Plus, I find Nick Sirriani annoying.
Consider this a good ol’ hate watch. Things seem turbulent in Philadelphia at the moment, and I’m here to watch the wheels fall off.
Sure, Jacksonville is a conference rival, and it seems like the Jaguars will be one of the top contenders, with the Chiefs in the race to win the AFC. But I like the Jags more than other AFC rivals like the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens, and I think they’re the lesser of two evils compared to Philly.
3. Los Angeles Rams to beat the Buffalo Bills
Wanting two L.A. teams to win this weekend doesn’t make me feel great, but it’s the boat we’re in this weekend. The Rams will take on the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, and I’d much rather see the former prevail over the latter.
I don’t hate the Bills—quite the opposite, in fact—but I still see them as the biggest rival and the biggest threat to the Chiefs in the AFC. In my opinion, Josh Allen is the only quarterback in the NFL capable of going toe-to-toe with Patrick Mahomes when he’s at his best.
Because of that, I’m all for anything that sets the Bills back or makes their journey through the playoffs harder. That includes a loss to the Rams.
The Bills (3-1) and Allen have been the darlings of the NFL media so far this season, but a surprise home loss to the New England Patriots last week was a reality check. Hopefully a second defeat in a row gives them another and helps Kansas City open up a bigger gap over Buffalo in the standings in the race for the No. 1 seed.
4. Tennessee Titans to beat the Houston Texans
My wife doesn’t really follow football. She knows who the Chiefs are, but she doesn’t have much interest in it outside of that.
This week, with Kansas City out of action, I asked for her thoughts on which team Chiefs fans should go for instead. I showed her all the helmets of the teams playing on Sunday and Monday and asked her to pick the one that spoke to her the most.
Her selection? The Tennessee Titans. Why? Because they have a ‘T’ on their helmet, and that’s the first letter of her name. Outstanding logic.
And actually, I’m on board with her choice. The Titans (0-4) have struggled this year and who doesn’t love an underdog? Plus, if they can cause an upset over the Houston Texans, it might just knock Houston out of the playoff race already, eliminating a top defense that the Chiefs might have to face down the road. Sounds good to me, Titan Up, baby!
