The latest NFL transaction wire features plenty of tryouts as teams prepare their rosters for the first full slate of preseason games. Training camp injuries are piling up, which generate new opportunities for players hanging onto their NFL dreams, and a close look at those making the rounds reveal some familiar faces. Several former Kansas City Chiefs players are doing their best to hang on. Here are the latest updates on familiar faces.
Geron Christian, OL
The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed former Chiefs tackle Geron Christian after hosting him on a free agent visit, making his 12th NFL stop since being drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
The Chiefs signed Christian after his release from the Houston Texans early in the '22 offseason. He provided some depth chart security for the Chiefs' second unit with Andrew Wylie and Nick Allegretti, but he never saw any real playing time on offense—although he did contribute on special teams in 10 games. This process is quite familiar for Christian, who has played for a startling amount of NFL teams, a list that includes Washington, Houston, K.C,, Miami, Cleveland, Tennessee, L.A. Rams, Dallas, and Denver.
Eric Scott, DB
The Houston Texans worked out a pair of defensive backs on Saturday: former Chiefs cornerback Eric Scott and Bryce Hall. Scott should sound like a familiar name to Chiefs Kingdom since he was just released last summer after spending a full year on the roster or practice squad. Claimed on waivers by the Chiefs in August 2024, the Chiefs liked the potential in the former Dallas Cowboys defensive back enough to keep him around for the regular season and then to re-sign him to a reserve/futures deal. However, his time ran out last August and he's been without an NFL home ever since.
Baylor Cupp, TE
Plenty of teams have been checking in on former Chiefs tight end Baylor Cupp this week. He's had tryouts on consecutive days with the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins. He then added a visit with the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday. Cupp originally entered the NFL with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech in 2024 and was kept around with a reserve/futures deal into 2025 until Brett Veach convinced Jake Briningstool to sign after the 2025 draft. The Chiefs waived both Cupp and fellow tight end Anthony Firkser to make room for newer prospects, and that was that in K.C. Cupp had an, ahem, cup of coffee with the Baltimore Ravens before jumping to the UFL this spring.
Cornell Powell, WR
Cornell Powell came to the Chiefs as a late-blooming wideout out of Clemson in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He stayed in close orbit as a frequent practice squad signing for his first few seasons before the Chiefs released him for good during the '24 campaign. Since then, short stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans, and Pittsburgh Steelers have followed, fueled by strong performances in the UFL with the DC Defenders (2024-25) that have kept him relevant for NFL teams. A Saturday visit with the Green Bay Packers is his latest attempt to fruther his professional career.
