Brandon Williams

It sounds weird to keep saying that all of these free agents could return, but Brandon Williams is another face whose potential re-signing makes sense depending on how the front office feels about two things: 1.) How Williams is aging, and 2.) the state of the team’s run defense.

Right now, the Chiefs have invited back both Derrick Nnadi and Turk Wharton from a year ago to serve time in the middle of the line next to Chris Jones. However, the unit lost Khalen Saunders to the New Orleans Saints in free agency and rebounded with the choice of sixth-round pick Keondre Coburn out of Texas. Is that enough?

This is where Williams’ return could be helpful, especially in the front half of the season. The Chiefs right now are clearly playing with a lot of hopeful parts hoping that something fits with the minor signings of Phil Hoskins, Matt Dickerson, Daniel Wise, Chris Williams, and Danny Shelton. If you’re shocked that you didn’t know those five were currently occupying five roster spots, don’t sweat it. That’s how uncertain this spot on the roster feels.

Given the state of things, it seems prime for a veteran addition to the run defense before the year begins, and Williams could provide that if he’s ready and willing. (If not, look for the Chiefs to add someone with a similar profile by late July.)
