Defensive Tackle Free Agents

Shelby Harris – I think Shelby Harris is the best player that KC could add from this entire post. He’s still an above average starting defensive tackle. Pairing him with Chris Jones would improve KC’s run defense and offer some three down upside. KC would likely have to create some cap space because unlike a lot of names on this list Harris probably still has enough leverage to command a solid contract.

Matt Ioannidis – Ioannidis is one of those guys that has been underrated for his entire career. He’d be my second choice of everyone in this post behind Harris. He’d be a good guy to play on early downs and then could come off the field on clear passing downs when other guys kick inside. However, he does push the pocket well and could play all three downs if needed. If he doesn’t command a big deal, he’d be a great signing for KC.

Chris Wormley – Similar to Dawuane Smoot at defensive end, Chris Wormley would be a great underrated signing to play on the interior. He’s not a big name but was a great run stopper for the Steelers for the past few years. He ended last season with an injury so he’ll have to prove he healthy, but he’d instantly be KC’s best run stopper on the interior if he is.

Ndamukong Suh and Akiem Hicks – I’m combining these two because my take on them is the same. These two are both past their prime and no longer the dominant players they once were. However, I think they both have just enough left in the tank to contribute as a part time player. They would be below the other three defensive tackles above, but they’d add some depth to a thin position group.

So there you have it Chiefs fans. Those are some of the free agent options available to help KC’s defensive line. Do you like any of these options? Are you hoping for a reunion with one of KC’s former defensive ends like Frank Clark or do you think they’d be better off beefing up the interior with one of the defensive tackles? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments below.
