KC Chiefs Schedule 2023: Game-by-game predictions for upcoming season
By Matt Conner
WEEK 14, Dec. 10 (Sunday) – vs. Buffalo Bills
There’s something about the desperation level of the Buffalo Bills here that is worrisome for me.
Stefon Diggs is getting older. Josh Allen is going to get more expensive. The Buffalo Bills are already starting to lose some talent in free agency that’s becoming more difficult to keep, and playing in Buffalo is always going to be a tough sell in free agency for a team that’s so close. This offseason, the Bills were able to keep Matt Milano but they lost Terrell Edmunds. They kept Jordan Poyer but lost Levi Wallace. A heartbreaking loss to the Bengals last postseason shifted the AFC pecking order and now Buffalo is outside the conference favorites.
If the Bills want to keep their momentum, they’re going to have to crash the party of one of the two AFC powers. Since the Chiefs are unlikely to win every single home game, it made sense to pencil Sean McDermott’s team here for a thrilling victory at Arrowhead, especially if Von Miller can return to form.
Prediction: Bills 27, Chiefs 24 (OT)
WEEK 15, Dec. 18 (Monday) – @ New England Patriots
After playing each other at least once a year for a solid half-decade or more, the Patriots have been missing from the Kansas City Chiefs schedule since their last matchup in October 2020. In that short span, the Pats have missed the postseason in two of three years and they were one-and-done in the Wild Card round in the single season that they made it in. How times have changed! But here’s the thing about New England. While some roster holes are clear and they’re not chasing a Super Bowl this year either, Bill Belichick’s teams are always a tough out and they take care of business when they need to. That’s why no one should write off the Patriots on paper knowing that an “off day” by Patrick Mahomes and company could turn dangerous against such a legendary coach.
Fortunately for K.C., they’re also well-coached with an abundance of talent in all the right places and no one is going to roll with Mac Jones over Patrick Mahomes in a QB showdown. The good news for Jones, however, is that Bill O’Brien is back on the N.E. sidelines and that should help him rebound from a frustrating sophomore season in the pros. The addition of JuJu Smith-Schuster will only help the receiving corps, as will the Mike Gesicki addition as the new tandem partner with Hunter Henry.
There’s still not enough firepower here to compete with the Chiefs but the most important part of this will be how Mac Jones looks in his third year to start the season.
Prediction: Chiefs 34, Patriots 18
