Shane Buechele, Quarterback

Although it may seem like a cop-out, the Chiefs have consistently demonstrated their belief in Shane Buechele. In the middle of the 2021 season, they prevented the Cardinals from signing him off their practice squad by signing him to their active roster, and they kept him on the active roster throughout the entire campaign in 2022, even though he never dressed for a game.

However, the recent signing of Blaine Gabbert has raised questions about the team’s faith in Buechele. While Gabbert may not have succeeded as an NFL starter, he has been a dependable backup for most of his career and could provide a veteran presence behind Mahomes. If the Chiefs were confident in Buechele, why would they bring in a veteran backup with limited potential who is too good to be a third-stringer? It is possible that Gabbert is simply an insurance policy in case of an injury during training camp. Alternatively, Gabbert could be the team’s third-string quarterback and be retained on the practice squad.

The signing of Gabbert suggests that the organization may not have complete trust in Buechele. As he enters his third year in the NFL, Buechele faces a crucial moment in his career. It’s time for him to prove himself as a capable passer and earn the trust of his coaches and teammates.
