It doesn’t seem that long ago when my dad would tell me every year without fail, “Next year is our year!” It never was. For years, all Chiefs Kingdom wanted was a winning season and then the playoffs, yet ever since the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes in 2017, there has only been one result that matters in Kansas City: the Super Bowl.

From an outside perspective, these goals seem lofty, and fan bases can’t expect their team to get to the Super Bowl every year. It’s just not fair, right? Well, tell that to the New England Patriots after they drafted future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. Out of the 20 years that Brady was the signal caller in New England, the Patriots went to nine Super Bowls, winning six. Now that the Chiefs have their quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, the regular season is great, complete with highlights of Mahomes making acrobatic throws and other great highlight reels, However, all Chiefs fans know none of it matters until the real season begins in the playoffs.

It took five AFC Championship appearances, three Super Bowl appearances, and two Super Bowl victories to get the nation’s attention. Still, the national media is finally expecting the same level of high expectations that Chiefs Kingdom has had for our team for a while now.

Going into 2023, the national media is not playing around. They will not repeat their 2022 predictions when they predicted Mahomes would regress or losing Tyreek Hill would be the end of the Chief’s dynasty. Instead, they are taking the red pill and embracing that the Chiefs are here to stay, and with that comes enormous expectations. It is no surprise to many that the reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes is seen as the best quarterback going into 2023—a perspective that includes Good Morning Football personality Kyle Brandt.

There is no reason to believe that Mahomes will not rise to the occasion and put together another MVP-like season in the behemoth that is the AFC. The AFC will be a high-flying affair in 2023, a stacked conference that will become even more so with the arrival of Aaron Rodgers with the New York Jets. Rodgers decided to bring his weapons with him in the form of Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb. The AFC is also welcoming back Odell Beckham Jr, who decided to join the Baltimore Ravens and add another weapon to Lamar Jackson’s arsenal.

It is not just Mahomes that should feel the pressure; football is a team sport, and the Chiefs team is considered the best team in the league. According to the NFL Network, the Chiefs are going into 2023 as the best team in football.

The high expectations that are being given by the national media should not come as a surprise to anyone in Chiefs Kingdom. The Chiefs are the best team in football right now, and the league’s best quarterback is here to lead them. It is very early in the offseason, and time will tell if the moves made in the offseason were the right ones, but right now, it is nice to know the rest of the nation thinks the Kansas City Chiefs are the best team in the NFL.

What do you think? Will the Chiefs suffer from a Super Bowl hangover or go on another Super Bowl run? Let me know in the comments.
