KC Chiefs have plenty of time to fix their roster needs
By Matt Conner
While it’d be nice for fans to see moves made to shore up the Chiefs needs, the truth is that K.C. has all the time in the world.
One look at the list of free agents left around the National Football League, especially at some particularly thin positions, and it’s easy to understand why some fans are ready to revolt. Each NFL team at this stage still has weaknesses, perhaps even on both sides of the ball, and when the pickings are slim, it’s easy to lose heart that a person’s favorite team will be able to put together a meaningful answer.
For some teams, that feeling is valid. Free agency is a primary way that many teams will be able to provide a patch over the hole that could sink their season. For the Kansas City Chiefs, however, there’s a lot of runway left when it comes to fixing the roster.
First, it’s important to remember that the Chiefs came into the offseason as defending Super Bowl champs and that a roster need for them is hardly the same as it is for, say, the Chicago Bears. When the Chiefs need a wide receiver, for instance, it’s a far cry from saying the Indianapolis Colts need a quarterback. Not all needs are created equal and the Chiefs have youth, depth, and elite talent that covers other concerns.
Beyond that, it’s also important to know that the Chiefs will also add further help in the draft and can expect to lean on those players if needed in just a few months. No one should really count on rookies, but the Chiefs played more rookies than any other team in football last year but two. In other words, Chiefs coaches had their rookies ready to play earlier than believed and there’s no reason to believe they couldn’t do so again.
Most importantly, however, is the truth that the Chiefs are going to be winning games whether or not they address their current roster concerns, which means they will be buyers at the NFL’s trade deadline. Unless something horrible happens and the season falls apart, the Chiefs will be among those turning to the pretenders at midseason and asking for their best pieces.
Just when you think the Chiefs might be out of wide receivers to consider, for example, just remember that current teams who aren’t selling will be six months from now. That likely means the Colts could be unloading Michael Pittman or the Texans deal Robert Woods or the Commanders might flip Curtis Samuels. It might even make free a set of faces who were already free just a bit ago. For example, if the Patriots fall behind in a tough AFC East, will they not make JuJu Smith-Schuster and others available for the taking?
The thing to remember for Chiefs Kingdom is that the offseason is long already but for Brett Veach and company, it’s even longer since they can afford to keep waiting on the best deals until almost halfway through the regular season. That makes for a boring time for fans wanting some action on the transaction wire, but when it comes down to postseason wins and losses, that’s exactly what any fan would ultimately want to see.
