KC Chiefs’ best free-agent deals during the Andy Reid era: CB Sean Smith
(2013 Three years/$18 million)
Sean Smith was another free agency cornerback brought in during the 2013 offseason to help revitalize the Chiefs. Smith had started 56 games and had five interceptions the past four years with the Miami Dolphins and was considered one of the most sought-after corners in that free agent class.
After beating out another free agent pickup in Dunta Robinson, Smith started opposite Brandon Flowers to make a formidable one-two punch in a Chiefs secondary that desperately needed an infusion of talent.
Smith stepped in and contribute immediately as Kansas City’s CB1. In Week Nine, Smith took a pass from Buffalo QB Jeff Tuel 100 yards to the house for the first pick-six of his career. Smith started 15 games for the Chiefs in 2013 and helped lead the Chiefs on an astonishing turnaround to the playoffs that year.
Smith made 44 starts during his three-year tenure in the red and gold, amassing 142 tackles and five interceptions, showcasing his talent as both a ball hawk and a tackler. He priced himself out of KC after the 2015 season, but his contributions to the defense during the prime of his career were undeniable.
