Kansas City Chiefs Draft Needs: The Top 25 Wide Receiver Prospects
The Top 6 wide receiver prospects for the Chiefs in the NFL draft
While the order of the top six prospects in this draft varies from expert to expert, the following six prospects seem to be the consensus top guys. If you believe the mock drafts and experts, the first four prospects below will likely be off the board when the Chiefs pick at the end of the first round so their options will likely be to trade up for one of the top four or take one of the last two on this page at pick #31.
1. Quentin Johnston – TCU – 6’3″ – 208 lbs
Johnston has the most upside in this class when it comes to being a true dominant force as an outside receiver. He could be a little more physical, but has the size/speed/big play ability to be a star. I’m not so high on him that I would want KC to give up what it would take to move up to take him, but if he slides for some reason he would definitely be worth a Trent McDuffie type trade up.
2. Jaxon Smith-Njigba – Ohio State – 6’1″ – 196 lbs – 4.53 forty
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the safest receiver prospect in this draft class. He is an excellent slot/possession type receiver that should be a reliable target from day one in the NFL. I think Smith-Njigba would be a home run addition for the Chiefs to help fill the production lost from Juju Smith-Schuster, but like Johnston I don’t believe he’ll fall far enough to make a trade up realistic.
3. Jordan Addison – USC – 5’11” – 173 lbs – 4.49 forty
Depending on who you talk to Jordan Addison could be the top receiver in this class or a clear 2nd best slot option behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Addison isn’t physically impressive or explosive, but he’s smooth and reliable as a route runner. A lot of people have Addison’s stock slipping right now and I think the Chiefs should absolutely consider moving up a little to grab him if he falls because like Smith-Njigba, he’s one of the few guys in this class that could help fill the possession role left by Juju from day one.
4. Zay Flowers – Boston College – 5’9″ – 182 lbs – 4.42 forty
If Jordan Addison’s stock is down a little right now, Zay Flowers seems to be trending up. He’s an undersized explosive playmaker that looks like he’d thrive in the slot, but also shows the ability to win outside. I like Flowers a lot and in a vacuum would love to see him in KC, but I’m not sure I like him so much more than the next guy on the list that it’s worth trading up for him. Having said that, I think he’d thrive in KC’s offense.
5. Josh Downs – North Carolina – 5’9″ – 171 lbs – 4.48 forty
Josh Downs is another undersized playmaker that is a reliable slot weapon and has shown great change of direction and route running separation. You see a lot of Elijah Moore comparisons, and I like that comp. I don’t know if Downs will ever be an elite number one receiver, but I think he’s someone that could contribute in the slot from day one and a coach like Andy Reid could make him very successful. I’d be on board with him as the pick if they go with a WR at #31.
6. Jalin Hyatt – Tennessee – 6’0″ – 176 lbs – 4.40 forty
Jalin Hyatt’s highlight reel makes him look like one of the most dynamic deep threats since DeSean Jackson, but there are legitimate concerns about his ability to beat man coverage in the NFL. I think Hyatt has high bust potential and he would scare me as a first round pick. I do think Andy Reid could scheme up ways to get him free and Patrick Mahomes has the arm to take advantage of him. I just see Hyatt as more of a Ted Ginn Jr. than a DeSean Jackson.
Now we move on to the possible day two options.
