The Dallas Cowboys are bringing in former Kansas City Chiefs running back Ronald Jones for a workout on Monday.

With another week of free agency looming on Monday morning, it’s another week of hopeful transactions for several familiar faces still hoping to find a new home for the coming NFL season. That list of former Kansas City Chiefs includes running back Ronald Jones, who has a reason for hope on Monday with a visit to the Dallas Cowboys.

Over the weekend, a report emerged saying that the Cowboys coaches and front office would spend time with a trio of players who would work out for the team as potential free agent signings, including Jones. While that sounds promising enough, the fact that the “trio” wasn’t a group of running backs coming in to compete against each other was even better.

Jones will be the only free agent back in Dallas on Monday, which could be a good sign that Jerry Jones & Co. have already zeroed in on his talents. The others joining him include former L.A. Rams linebacker Travin Howard and former Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Chuma Edoga.

It’s not as if Jones is coming off of an impressive year with the Kansas City Chiefs. Jones rarely played for the entire year in a season that surprised both player and fans when it came to Jones’s predicament. Shortly after signing a one-year deal in free agency, Chiefs Kingdom largely had Jones pegged as a potential competitor for starter’s reps with Clyde Edwards-Helaire. By the NFL trade deadline, Jones intimated that he wanted out but the Chiefs would not oblige. By season’s end, both CEH and Jones were marginalized while Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon formed the backfield’s contributions to the Chiefs’ offense.

Jones, however, was a valuable component to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers teams in recent history, including ones with Super Bowl visions. Jones also brings even more recent championship experience with the Chiefs, even if he was largely a healthy observer all the while. Jones is still only 25 years old coming off of a fairly fresh year in ’22 and a solid 4.5 yards/carry average in his career.

Last season, Jones had 17 carries for 70 yards and 1 touchdown.
