ESPN analyst and former NFL player Marcus Spears loves the mutual fit between the Chiefs and Odell Beckham Jr.
Marcus Spears knows a thing or two from his days of playing along the Dallas Cowboys defensive front for nearly a decade, and specifically he was able to watch elite performers like Terrell Owens do their thing at wide receiver. So it’s interesting, at the very least, to hear him explain his reasoning why he loves the Kansas City Chiefs as the “perfect” fit for Odell Beckham Jr. in free agency.
The Chiefs are among a few rumored suitors for Beckham at this point, but nothing substantive has happened so far since free agency opened. In fact, Beckham flirted with teams last year hoping to find somewhere to sign, but he ended up sitting out the entire year due to injury and the rumors were all for nothing.
That could still remain true this time around, but Spears says the Chiefs are the best home for Beckham for a number of reasons and he also lays out the potential parameters of a contract in his latest appearance on ESPN.
Here’s the transcript from what he says above:
“No, he doesn’t need to be in the one spot, but he’ll be a one in Kansas City, which should be the obvious spot for me. When you think about it, he’s only the one at wide receiver because Travis Kelce ain’t a wide receiver. That’s why he would be the one, but he’d still be the two, when you talk about the ability and effectiveness of the guys.
“I think you do a one-year deal, $6-7 million in Kansas City. More than likely you’re going to end up in that AFC Championship based on what we’ve watched the last five years. And you’ll have an opportunity as well to have dynamic numbers, show that you’re back fully healthy, without it all being on you, but you can make those explosive splash plays that Odel wants to make as well.
“I think Kansas City would be perfect with him. Great play caller. Great quarterback. And a great tight end and you would just fit seamlessly in.”
The Dallas Cowboys were also reportedly in on Beckham but they just traded two low-level picks for Brandin Cooks, so they are likely out of the running. The Ravens were also mentioned, but they are a run-heavy team whose wide receivers are pissed at the way they are under-utilized—and that doesn’t even touch the Lamar Jackson scenario. Is it possible Beckham is waiting to see how that will play out? Are the Chiefs playing hardball knowing they have the leverage of being the defending champs?
It’s hard to say how long all of this will go on, but the smoke is definitely swirling. Spears might be right about the fit, but it takes much more than that to reach an agreement these days.
