Jordan Addison – USC

While most mock drafts leave the Chiefs at No. 31 overall, we appreciate the variety provided by Luke Easterling of Yahoo! Sports for constructing a mock draft in which general manager Brett Veach decides to package some picks and move up for the player he wants.

First, before we get to the player, the idea of trading up is actually quite probable in this instance. Remember, only two other teams in the entire NFL played rookies for more snaps than the Chiefs last year. That means there are a lot of players who should be growing into their roles in year two and K.C. might not need another 10-12 picks in their draft class when all is said and done.

Instead, it might make more sense for the Chiefs to put some picks together to get an impact player and make a major investment in that way, which is how Easterling has the Chiefs getting Jordan Addison, a wide receiver from USC. Here’s what he has to say about his pick:

"Patrick Mahomes still won another MVP and Super Bowl after Tyreek Hill’s departure, but free agency could leave the cupboard bare at wide receiver again this offseason. In return for their second-round pick, the Chiefs leap up the board to land arguably the most polished and pro-ready pass-catcher in the class."

For a team bringing back an inexperienced Skyy Moore, an injury-prone Kadarius Toney, and an inconsistent Marquez Valdes-Scantling at wide receiver, the idea of investing in a “sure thing” like Addison sure makes a lot of sense for the Chiefs.

Addison had 875 yards and 8 touchdowns in his lone season with the Trojans after transferring from Pitt, where he won the Biletnikoff the previous season. His hands, agility, speed, and instincts make him a dynamic target that Reid could move outside or in, and it doesn’t take a major projection to see him as the eventual new top target as Travis Kelce nears the end of his career.

The Chiefs will eventually see Mahomes enter a new era of this offense once both Kelce and Tyreek Hill are gone. Addison could be a new cornerstone to define that era.
