KC Chiefs: Ranking the top offseason needs
Both Offensive Tackle positions
Every Chiefs fan knows that the offensive tackles were the weak link to the offensive line and potentially the entire offense as well this past season. Orlando Brown Jr. had a rough start to the year but eventually came on strong in the second half of the season, allowing zero sacks in the final six games. Andrew Wylie also stepped up his play over the final couple of months of the season.
Both players are pending unrestricted free agents that are scheduled to hit the open market on March 15. Brown will likely be franchise tagged again (costing around $19.994M), while Wylie will need to be re-signed to a new contract if the Chiefs want to retain him. I’m not sure it’s the wisest idea to sign either player long-term. Lucas Niang and Prince Tega Wanogho, the latter of which is a restricted free agent, are still options but I don’t imagine the team will feel comfortable relying upon either as a starter.
Brett Veach and his team need to carve out a plan for the long term regarding the offensive tackle position. Whether that be signing both to a long-term contract, tagging Brown and letting Wylie walk, bringing in 1 or 2 fresh bodies from the draft, or some sort of combination. There needs to be a plan when it comes to protecting Patrick Mahomes.
