KC Chiefs: Ranking the top offseason needs
The Kansas City Chiefs are the reigning Super Bowl champions and are about to begin their offseason work to defend their title. The NFL is a year-round league and the offseason is almost as entertaining as the normal season is for many fans, and maybe even more for some. There’s free agency, where the Chiefs will have an opportunity to sign established NFL veterans, and the 2023 NFL Draft, to add youth to the roster.
Although the team is in a great position, they could still stand to add talent to the roster as several areas have significant question marks.
What positions are the most concerning for the Chiefs heading into the offseason? Let’s review four position groups the team must address this offseason.
Safety
Justin Reid is signed through 2024 and Bryan Cook through 2025, but Juan Thornhill is another pending free agent in a couple of weeks. Reid played very well in the second half of the season and Cook was solid as a rookie, but I’m not convinced Thornhill will return to the team this season. If he doesn’t, the Chiefs need to find a third safety, as I don’t view Deon Bush as the answer to that question, and Nazeeh Johnson is more of a special teams ace.
I don’t foresee them signing a big-ticket free agent at the position or using a first-round pick on one, but it also wouldn’t shock me if they did. Reid and Cook are fine starters, but it would be in the team’s best interest for them to bring in a solid third option, whether that be Juan Thornhill or someone else.
