The Kansas City Chiefs have filled their empty quarterbacks coach position with a promotion for David Girardi.

The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to ultimately promote from within when it comes to the biggest openings on the coaching staff alongside Andy Reid. That’s good news for both Matt Nagy and David Girardi.

Andy Reid announced the news from the 2023 NFL Combine during his time in front of reporters.

The former was already mentioned as the team’s new offensive coordinator in recent days, as Nagy replaces Eric Bieniemy, who took a job under Ron Rivera with the Washington Commanders. Nagy will now head up the league’s most dynamic offense with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce working in tandem. However, Mahomes will have a newly elevated voice in the quarterbacks room with the ascent of Girardi to be his positional coach.

Of course, Girardi was already present as the assistant QB coach and passing game analyst, but this places him in a dynamic career position as someone to watch. Despite Bieniemy’s ridiculous misfortune, the truth is that coaching on offense alongside Andy Reid has been a serious leap forward for most coaching candidates—including Nagy himself, Doug Pederson, and Matt Kafka in recent years.

Girardi spent three years as a grad assistant/coach for the Northwestern Wildcats from 2014-2016, including Mike Kafka’s lone year at Northwestern as well. From there, he’s served with the Chiefs since 2018 as a quality control coach before making his climb up the coaching ladder.

Andy Reid also mentioned that the team interviewed Boise State offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan before deciding to go forward with Girardi.
