The Commanders are going to need a stronger ground game going forward for a number of reasons, including making life a bit easier on assumed starter Sam Howell in his second season. That means strengthening the line, of course, but the tight end position is also important for any team’s efforts to move the chains out of the backfield.

Right now, the Commanders have a decent tight end room, but there’s not a great blocker among the re lot. They also struggle a lot with injuries. Logan Thomas is a fine asset and the Commanders have some intriguing young players (including recent mid-round picks like John Bates and Cole Turner) but injuries have robbed the unit of its effectiveness and even then, they’re more suited to helping in the passing game than providing run support.

Enter Blake Bell. Bell has been the Belldozer for the Chiefs in three of his last four seasons, a strong run blocker who won’t embarrass himself with mistakes in the passing game. Bell could serve as another veteran voice familiar with Bieniemy’s vision and his championship experience would not be lost on a younger crop of tight ends.

The bigger question for Bell is whether he’ll want to come back for another year after winning another Super Bowl ring. If so, he could be an under-the-radar acquisition for a Commanders’ offense learning to grow under a new leader.
