Bills sign former Chiefs safety Zayne Anderson to 2-year deal

The Buffalo Bills have signed former Kansas City Chiefs safety Zayne Anderson to a two-year deal.

The Buffalo Bills have strengthened their secondary and special teams play, at least on paper, with the signing of former Kansas City Chiefs safety Zayne Anderson. The signing was reportedly a two-year deal, per ESPN report Alaina Getzenberg.

Anderson has spent the last two seasons with the Chiefs and won a Super Bowl ring with this year’s roster.

The Chiefs first added Anderson as a former undrafted free agent out of Brigham Young University following the 2021 NFL Draft. Anderson was a potential late-round pick but his advanced age for a rookie—remember BYU prospects often are older having spent a year or more doing volunteer work (their Mormon mission)—likely pushed him off of draft boards.

The Chiefs have had a strong link with BYU since Andy Reid arrived as head coach back in 2013, who is himself an alum, and the Chiefs liked Anderson’s special teams potential. He was a versatile defensive back who was considered a hard hitter with a non-stop motor who was extremely coachable.

To Anderson’s credit, he not only made the team’s practice squad out of his first preseason, but the Chiefs even activated him and gave him a few defensive snaps in the postseason following the 2021 season.

This year, the Chiefs simply invested way too much in a reloaded secondary for Anderson to make his mark. The Chiefs drafted five players alone in the secondary and signed Justin Reid to join them, which made it tough for Anderson to make his presence felt even further. He appeared in only three games for the Chiefs this year and will now move on to Buffalo to try to further his NFL dreams.
