Let’s preface the entire article with this; No one else in the league compares to Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. You guys don’t need to read this article in full to grasp that concept. You don’t have to head down to the comments and tell me how I am stating the obvious, but I encourage you all to hear me out on this one. Trust me, you’re going to want to.
Most of us agree already that no one in the NFL should be compared to Mahomes yet, people still do it all the time. We always knew a lot of the comparisons were silly and nowhere near justified. National media talking heads have tried their best to stir some sort of controversy or make an argument for another quarterback being better than Mahomes. Most of us constantly make the mistake of actually listening to what those people have to say instead of moving on and ignoring it, but we’re passionate Chiefs fans. We’re going to defend our guy. That’s sports.
Whether it be Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, Josh Allen, or Joe Burrow, we’ve pretty much heard it all at this point when it comes to quarterback comparisons and hot takes. None of them ever really had any merit. Even Joe Burrow who has a winning record against Mahomes still doesn’t even have a Super Bowl or MVP award to show for it.
This obviously isn’t to discredit those quarterbacks who are all great, but they just aren’t Mahomes and never were. Nor, have any of them accomplished anywhere close to what Mahomes has when he was their age and experience. Most of those guys will likely win at least one at some point or pick up an accolade in their career and good for them, but it’ll be hard to do so with Mahomes being in this league.
Following his second MVP award that Mahomes picked up on Thursday night and an opportunity to win his second Super Bowl on Sunday, Mahomes could be entering a historic category. One in which he’d stand alone.
A KC Chiefs Super Bowl win should end any comparison for Patrick Mahomes
Patrick Mahomes already joined a list with just eight other quarterbacks on it who have won multiple MVP awards, but if he can nab another Super Bowl win then he would join a list of just 12 other quarterbacks who have won multiple Super Bowls. At age 27. Let that sink in. If Mahomes truly pulls it off, it would simply be the most impressive first five seasons for any quarterback or player in NFL history.
Hosting five straight AFC Championship games, which had never been done before until the Chiefs did it this year, is an amazing feat on its own. However, when you’re talking about how Mahomes is viewed from a national perspective, people want to see you succeeding and winning a Super Bowl in most of those opportunities. Luckily, the Chiefs stole a win from the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship with Mahomes on one ankle to reach another Super Bowl which put them at a winning record in the AFC Championship game in the Mahomes era. That was important for his legacy.
Now, he has a chance to make it a winning record in the Super Bowl and take down what many people consider to be the much more talented and well-rounded team in the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Assuming he can do it, there would then be no debate about anyone being better than Patrick Mahomes.
Again, there never was a real debate for it, we know that as Chiefs fans, but Mahomes would have nothing left to prove if he can complete this task. He would have beaten Joe Burrow, his supposed kryptonite, he would have multiple Super Bowls, and multiple MVP awards. Multiple-time passing yards leader, multiple-time passing touchdown leader, Super Bowl MVP, and an offensive player of the year award under his belt, too. Honest question; What else would he have to do to prove he is the best quarterback in the game afterward?
Let’s also not forget that no one thought the Chiefs would be here either. Not to get lost in the whole “Let’s try to make the Chiefs the underdog here” thing, but the Buffalo Bills were the overwhelming favorite before the season started, Josh Allen was crowned the MVP before a snap was even played, and everyone thought the Chiefs would take a step back because they traded away the best receiver in the league and went young. Instead, Mahomes set the record for most total yards in a season and was the best player all year long even without Tyreek Hill. What he has done is just too impressive.
So, let’s stop the disrespect. No one comes close to Patrick Mahomes. He is only going to continue his greatness and if he wins Super Bowl LVII, he could retire the next day and be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. No other quarterback his age can say that. Mahomes would have to be placed in his own tier. No more Dan Orlovsky saying Joe Burrow is the better quarterback. No more crowning the next guy as better than Mahomes. It’s not happening. It’s dumb to suggest. A Super Bowl victory should end any comparison.
We know better than to think the talk will stop, though. It’s what the media does, but if it continues after Mahomes wins the Super Bowl, insanity would be reaching a point that is beyond ridiculous. Just take a look at the trophy case.
Nevertheless, everyone including Chiefs fans who haven’t already would have to realize how incredible it would be for Mahomes and his legacy for the aforementioned to happen. With Tom Brady now retiring, no one else currently playing in the NFL would have a resume remotely similar to Mahomes. The question after that would just be where he lands all-time after it’s all said and done.
