Willie Gay’s confidence could be a good sign for Chiefs defensive posture

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay says there’s “nothing” impressive about the Cincinnati Bengals offense.

The Cincinnati Bengals might be playing the best football in the National Football League right now and over the last half of the regular season, but don’t tell that to Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay.

We’re not sure if Gay is speaking only for himself or for the entire defense of the Chiefs, but as Kansas City prepares to play host to the visiting Bengals on Sunday night, it’s clear there’s nothing that “impresses” him when it comes to what Joe Burrow and company will try to do in the AFC Championship game.

There’s a bit of posturing here, of course, since this quote would make sense when talking about, say, a divisional rival in the AFC West. The Chiefs have dominated most opponents in such a way that the defense shouldn’t be too worried about what anyone wants to do. However, the Bengals have the best arsenal of pass catchers in the game as well as arguably the best quarterback in the game not named Mahomes.

Let’s not forget the Bengals have won three straight over K.C.

Still, it’s interesting that Gay, at this point, is not even interested in paying any lip service here. The Chiefs defense is clearly feeling confident in the game plan and they are also playing excellent football. The unit is healthy, and they just had a full week of rest two weekends ago. If Gay doesn’t want to play along and pat the Bengals on the back for being “good, too”, that’s his prerogative, and he clearly doesn’t care if it turns into bulletin board material.

For some fans, they’ll shake their heads at Gay’s “unfounded” confidence but it could be a good sign of things to come, of a Chiefs defensive unit that is unmoved by the idea of taking on Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Mixon and Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd once again. Maybe they have something up their sleeve.

Chiefs Kingdom can only hope it’s a win.
