Sometimes a journeyman player in the National Football League can get lucky (or fortunate) and garner interest from a team that’s in the Super Bowl hunt. Unfortunately for players who sign nothing but a series of single-season free agent deals in their professional careers, they’re typically subject to whichever teams shows them interest—good or not.

For Michael Burton, life as a fullback is always going to limit his options considering that many teams don’t even utilize the position anymore, as if it’s an archaic notion to carry someone who blocks in the run game.

For Burton, it’s been two years with the Detroit Lions and another two years with the Chicago Bears. There were two stints with the New Orleans Saints and another season spent with the Washington Football Team. Through it all, Burton was able to at least make a solid playoff push with the Saints in 2020, he didn’t get to the end.

Now that he’s with the Chiefs, he’s got his best chance to end up under the bright lights in Glendale—a nice opportunity for a journeyman at a declining position.
