Everything you should know about KC Chiefs and the AFC Championship
By Matt Conner
We have everything here that you need to know about the Kansas City Chiefs and their fifth consecutive AFC Championship game appearance.
For most of the 60 minutes of on-field action between the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars and the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, a win was in doubt for the home team despite the fact that they held a sizable lead. That’s what happens when your star quarterback leaves with an ankle injury only to return and realize he’s clearly in pain.
Somehow, the magic of Patrick Mahomes is still accessible even when hobbled and the Chiefs were able to hold off Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars by a final score of 27-20.
Moving forward, the Chiefs’ win in the Divisional Round means they will move onto the AFC Championship game. But just like the future of Mahomes himself, there are also questions about how that game will play out and even what the official details will be.
In order to clarify the picture a bit, we’ve got you covered with everything you need to know about the Chiefs and the AFC Championship game.
How many consecutive AFC Championships have the Chiefs played in?
With their win over the Jaguars, the Chiefs will have played in five AFC Championship games in a row once they take the field next weekend. It is a tremendous accomplishment for any team to make it to a conference championship, but for the Chiefs to host that many and to do so for a half-decade is truly remarkable.
Surprisingly, the Chiefs would need to repeat this level of success in 2023, 2024, and 2025 just to tie the New England Patriots, who made it to eight straight conference championship games from 2011-18. If the Chiefs were in the NFC, they would have set the record with this appearance.
Who are the Chiefs going to play in the AFC Championship?
The Chiefs’ opponent is still unknown since they were among the first teams to play in the Divisional Round. The Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills are the two remaining teams in the race, and the Chiefs will face the winner of that Divisional Round game in the conference championships
When and where is the AFC Championship?
Here’s where things get real sticky. If the Bengals win, the AFC Championship will be held at Arrowhead Stadium like any normal season in which the top seed earned the home-field advantage for the duration of the conference level of the postseason. However, if the Bills win, both Buffalo and K.C. will travel to Atlanta to play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Why would the NFL change the location for the AFC Championship?
Earlier this year, when live on primetime in Week 17, the Bills and Bengals watched Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin hit the turf with a heart issue and needed to resuscitated on the field. The loss of Hamlin and the tragic and scary nature of the injury kept both teams from playing the rest of that night, and the NFL eventually decided to postpone and then cancel the game. In order to make it up to Buffalo, who held the inside track to earning the first-round, the NFL ruled that if the final AFC matchup would be played on a neutral site (ATL) if it came down to K.C. and Buffalo.
