Jerrion Ealy re-signs to Chiefs practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed Cornell Powell on injured reserve and re-signed Jerrion Ealy to take his place.
A familiar face is back with the Kansas City Chiefs as of Tuesday with the news that the team has re-signed offensive weapon Jerrion Ealy. Ealy returns to the Chiefs practice squad after being let go in recent weeks.
On Tuesday, the Chiefs created an open spot on the 16-player practice squad when wide receiver Cornell Powell was placed on injured reserve. The move opened up a spot for someone to join the team, and Ealy was a good fit as someone who is already a known quantity as well as a player who can fill that offensive role.
Ealy was first signed as an undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss who could provide a versatile player for the Chiefs on both offense and special teams. Ealy profiled as a potential returner for Dave Toub’s units, but he could also serve as a weapon out of the backfield or lining up wide on offense—depending on how he took to coaching from Andy Reid’s staff.
As a rusher at Ole Miss, Ealy averaged 5.8 yards per carry and had 20 touchdowns on the ground in his three year career. He also caught 67 total passes for another 545 yards and 4 scores and added two more touchdowns on kick returns.
Powell is a familiar name for Chiefs fans who’ve watched him attempt to make the active roster over the last two preseasons. A former fifth-round pick in 2021, Powell was a late-bloomer for the Clemson Tigers, Powell looked much better in this year’s training camp than his first year, and the Chiefs are likely going to want to see how he progresses in his third season in the NFL.
