2. Andy Reid

I love Andy Reid, but I couldn’t narrow his resolutions down to just one.

Resolutions:

1. Stop overthinking 3rd and short.

2. Be aggressive on 4th down.

3. Don’t abandon the run when the offense is struggling.

I think these are pretty self-explanatory. The Chiefs are a great third-down team, except when it comes to third and short and then they’re one of the worst in the league. Reid needs to stop getting cute and overthinking things. Just run your offense. Pretend it’s third and four and just let Mahomes throw the ball on a normal pass play. It will be better than whatever they are doing now. And if you don’t pick it up…

Be aggressive on 4th down! This team lets opposing teams off the hook far too often when they have a chance to bury them. Reid needs to recognize that and not be scared to go for it more often on 4th down, primarily whenever they are on the opposing team’s side of the field. Special teams have been a mess (more on that in a second) so stop making the other team happy by trying a field goal. Put the ball in Pat’s hands and good things usually happen.

Finally, when the offense does struggle or Mahomes is a little out of sync, don’t forget the run game. I know it’s cliché, but there’s a reason coaches have used the run game to help settle a quarterback down for decades. Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon have both proven they can be great weapons so use them to get the offense in rhythm instead of just dropping Mahomes back again and again and again when he’s in a rut. We all know he’ll snap out of it eventually, but help him out a little by leaning on the running backs when the passing game is sputtering.

Andy Reid is a Hall of Fame coach. Period. However, if he would do these three things I think KC would have such a dominant advantage in coaching it would set them up to win each and every week.

Finally, let’s talk about the most needed New Year’s resolution for the Chiefs.
