There are other reasons to think the Chiefs will round into form before the NFL playoffs. Patrick Mahomes had his worst game of the season by far versus the Broncos. It’s unlikely he’ll have another three-turnover game the rest of the way. In fact, if history’s any indication, I’d bet on him returning to form over the last four games. Veteran running back Jerick McKinnon also checked in with a brilliant 7-catch, 112 receiving yard, 2 touchdown day on the way to Kansas City’s 10th win of the season.

In-season improvements, this late into the regular season, are rare because you typically don’t get an infusion of talent until the offseason. For Kansas City, that maturation will be the result of getting healthier, the addition of a veteran defensive player with a very particular set of skills, and the development of Year One players. Time will tell, just how many of these things coalesce, but the signs are encouraging as the Chiefs approach the finish line of the regular season.
