Four grand narratives for potential KC Chiefs vs. Eagles Super Bowl
By Scott Loring
The Doug Pederson factor
Current Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson shares a common thread with both the Eagles and Chiefs, of course. Odds are he would be rooting for the Chiefs while he watches at home from his couch, but here is a list of common threads and relationships he would hold in this possible matchup:
- When Reid began his coaching career in 1999, his first starting quarterback with the Eagles was none other than Doug Pederson. Signed as a free agent from Green Bay (where Reid was once his quarterbacks coach) to hold things over while rookie Donovan McNabb developed, Pederson started nine games in 1999 before McNabb took over.
- After retiring from playing, Pederson was hired by Reid to be an offensive assistant. He spent four years with the Eagles and subsequently moved to the Chiefs to become Reid’s offensive coordinator in 2013. Pederson spent three years in Kansas City before being hired as the head coach at (any guesses?) Philadelphia, where he won a Super Bowl in 2017.
- Employed current Chiefs linebackers coach Ken Flajole for five years
- Was a key figure in drafting several current Eagles players, including quarterback Jalen Hurts
- Was fired in January of 2021 and replaced by Nick Sirianni
Pederson spent a year away from the game before becoming the head coach of the Jaguars this season, but his ties to Reid (and his staff) but also to the Eagles both remain strong. A potential Chiefs/Eagles Super Bowl matchup would create a very interesting interview with Pederson.
Speaking of Sirianni: Did you know?
