Early last week, the Kansas City Chiefs announced they were signing former L.A. Chargers and Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon to their practice squad.
Now, heading into their clash this weekend against the Broncos, I believe there is one very, very important reason why Gordon should take the field for KC: it would be absolutely hilarious.
There is no way to put it nicely: Denver’s season has been an unmitigated disaster. The Broncos went all-in on quarterback Russell Wilson, thinking they were “just a quarterback away”. It was a deal that backfired spectacularly, and one that could go down as one of the worst trades in NFL history.
Nothing would be better in Week 14 than pouring salt in the wound known as the Denver Broncos season in ’22.
After Denver mortgaged their future to get Wilson, he has been at the head of an offense that is last in the NFL in both points scored (166) and points per game (13.8), and 27th in yards per game (315.2).
To be fair, Gordon was part of the problem for Denver on offense too, having had a rather unspectacular season. He is averaging 3.5 yards per carry this season (one of the lowest averages in the league), and he has more than twice as many fumbles (five) as he does rushing touchdowns (two). Those fumbles often seemed to come in crucial situations, with a number of them occurring in the red zone.
Denver finally decided they had seen enough of Gordon and the team cut him last month, much to the relief of many Broncos fans. And that is exactly why I think Kansas City should make Gordon a big part of their offense this weekend: because it would be absolutely hilarious.
Imagine if after having a terrible season for the Broncos, Gordon came out with the Chiefs and absolutely torched the Broncos. I would love to see Gordon rush for something like 70 yards on Sunday and have 2 touchdowns—both things he failed to do as a Bronco this season.
Imagine how that would make Broncos fans feel, having watched Gordon struggle for them all season, to then see him finally turn it on against them? For Gordon, it is a revenge game with the added bonus of absurd hilarity. I would love to see the Chiefs do everything they can to get the ball in Gordon’s hands and drive up his stats.
We have seen Andy Reid and the Chiefs do things like this before. Late in a game earlier this season, when Kelce needed a few extra yards to reach the 100-yard mark, the Chiefs tried to throw him a short shovel pass so he could reach the milestone. Kelce dropped it, but the thought was there.
And we have seen that Reid and the Chiefs don’t mind heaping some extra misery on Broncos fans either. Who could forget Dontari Poe’s touchdown pass to Demetrius Harris late in a blowout victory over Denver on Christmas night in 2016?
Who knows, we might see something similar with Gordon against the Broncos this Sunday.
