The Los Angeles Rams have ruled quarterback Matthew Stafford out in their scheduled game for Week 12 against the Chiefs.

At this point, it was pretty much settled that the Kansas City Chiefs weren’t going to have to face the Los Angeles Rams at their best, but on Wednesday, the Rams made it official that starting quarterback Matthew Stafford would be forced to sit out Week 12.

The Rams are scheduled to visit the Chiefs in K.C.’s only home game for the next month, but over time, the matchup has become a far cry from the initial showdown of Super Bowl contenders as expected. In fact, the line is a laughable 14.5 points in favor of the Chiefs, per Vegas oddsmakers.

It felt odd that Stafford would even have had a chance to play in K.C. given that he’s been dealing with a head injury. The league’s emphasis on concussions and such safety protocols should have closed that door days ago, but it wasn’t until the Rams announced he was out that things were official.

The move opens the door for undrafted quarterback Bryce Perkins to take over given that second-string quarterback John Wolford is also out for L.A.

As for the Chiefs, it should be an easy chance to pick on the new kid given how much Steve Spagnuolo loves to blitz the passer as the team’s defensive coordinator. And going up against the very best in the league in Patrick Mahomes makes for a rough first quarterback matchup for the young Perkins.
