Conclusion

The frustrating conclusion for Chiefs fans and fantasy football fans all over is that the Chiefs are probably right to continue to use a mix of all three backs. I don’t think they feel like Jerick McKinnon is built to be an every-down back that logs a bunch of carries. I think they like Isiah Pacheco, but I don’t think they trust him to stay on the field a lot on passing downs. I think they feel like Clyde can play on any down, but I think they recognize that he isn’t the top option at either.

You can make a decent argument that the Chiefs should use Pacheco as their primary rusher and McKinnon as their primary passing down back. However, the Chiefs pride themselves in keeping opposing defenses on their toes, so they are going to have to mix things up enough to not be predictable based on what back is on the field. That will probably mean keeping Clyde in the mix on both running and passing downs as well as running McKinnon some and throwing the ball while Pacheco is on the field. In other words, a lot of the same things they are already doing, but with a slightly increased role for Pacheco.

Speaking of Pacheco, I really think increasing his role in the rushing attack and then utilizing more play action while he is on the field could be a good thing for the offense. Defenses will always be concerned about Patrick Mahomes and if they get beat on a few good play-action plays with Pacheco on the field it will cause them to hesitate just enough on running plays for Pacheco to make them pay.

So what do you think Chiefs fans? Do you see anyone Chiefs back that deserves to be a true #1 back as the season plays out? Do you agree with the assessment that Pacheco is best suited to carry the ball, but that his limitations in the passing game could hold him back? What about the passing game? Do you like McKinnon in that role or do you think Clyde has earned a bigger role there? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments below.
