In this week’s Morse Minute, Greg Morse gives his love and hate observations while the Kansas City Chiefs are on their bye week.

The Kansas City Chiefs are on a bye this week, which has given me (and probably most of Chiefs Kingdom) the bye week blues. How are you handling things? Did you even watch football today? I know I did, but it just wasn’t quite the same.

Most years, the Chiefs have played on or close to my birthday (November 1st). Just last year, they played on Monday Night Football and I got to go to Arrowhead and watch them with my mom. Seven years ago, my Papa took me to London to watch the Chiefs for my 21st birthday—now that was an experience!

But this year, tragically, the Chiefs are on their bye and so I’m left to scour the other league happenings relevant to the Chiefs that I loved and hated.

Things I loved

  1. The Las Vegas Raiders getting shutout by the New Orleans Saints: You know you smiled. Maybe even laughed. It’s a good day when anyone in the AFC West loses. It’s an even better day when the Raiders lose. But it’s a great day when they get shut out. You love to see it.
  2. The Chiefs showing that a team that games together, wins together: Did you see Patrick Mahomes’ tweet about the new Call of Duty coming out over the bye week? He tagged the rest of the squad, and this was after JuJu said last week that all the boys got together and played a few rounds before playing the San Francisco 49ers. Kyler Murray has got to be fuming.
  3. The whole world making fun of Russell Wilson: I actually do like DangeRuss, but even I am starting to think his antics are getting out of hand. The report this week that he spent part of the flight to London exercising and doing ‘knee-highs’ among other things. This blew up the internet, and it was glorious. But nothing topped the Ravens’ Justin Tucker response.

Things I hated

  1. Russ and the Broncos still winning: I didn’t get a chance to watch the game on Sunday morning, but seeing the live score, I was very happy to see the Denver Broncos offense still struggling. Unfortunately, the Jacksonville Jaguars weren’t able to hang on to a late lead. Oh well, 3-5 and continued dysfunction is better than what most people predicted. I’ll take it.
  2. Ronald Jones wants his release: What a weird 24 hours for RoJo. At first, he seemed happy that the Chiefs had traded for Kadarius Toney, but then the very next day he was apparently asking for his release. I get it, Jones signed a 1-year contract hoping to get serious playing time this year. But he’s been a healthy scratch all year. You can’t underestimate those seventh-round rookies.
  3. The Buffalo Bills: Sorry Buffalo, nothing personal, they are just the biggest threats to the Chiefs this season. As of this writing, it’s unclear who has won their matchup with the Green Bay Packers, but here’s to hoping the Cheeseheads won. Some have said that Patrick Mahomes vs Josh Allen is the new Tom Brady vs Peyton Manning. With all due respect to Josh Allen, I’m hoping Mahomes ends up looking like Brady. Who knows, maybe Brady will even still be playing.

How are you getting through the bye-week blues? What observations have you loved and hated? Let me know @thegregmorse.
