3 important practice squad players for Chiefs in season’s second half

Quarterback Chris Oladokun
There is not a quarterback controversy in Kansas City. But, rookie quarterback Chris Oladokun can help the Chiefs on the practice squad.
Oladokun had an unremarkable collegiate career until his fifth year. He bounced from South Florida to Samford, then ended up at South Dakota State as a graduate transfer. In 2021, Oladokun was an honorable mention All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection after passing for 3,164 yards and 25 touchdowns. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him 241st overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. The potential was there, especially with Oladokun’s plus-athletic profile.
The Steelers ended up cutting Oladokun before he could take a preseason snap, as they already had a three-way quarterback race. Oladokun visited with the Chiefs on Aug. 31 as a potential practice squad addition. As fate would have it, the Chiefs had hosted him for a top-30 visit ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft. Kansas City had obviously been watching the raw passer for months and signed him to the practice squad.
The way Oladokun helps the Chiefs is not on game day, but rather in practice. One of Oladokun’s strengths is his ability to stretch a play out. Depth quarterbacks Chad Henne and Shane Buechele are not known for their mobility, which prevents them from mimicking all opposing quarterbacks. The Chiefs face quarterbacks like Kyler Murray, Josh Allen, and Russell Wilson. All three find success both outside the pocket and on the run. Oladokun helps Kansas City be prepared for these opponents while still developing his craft.
