Kevin King, Cornerback

If there’s one thing in football that Brett Veach loves doing, it’s taking flyers on former top picks that didn’t work out with their original teams, like Mike Hughes, Deandre Baker, and Reggie Ragland, for example. The Chiefs may opt to bring in a veteran, such as Janoris Jenkins or Josh Norman, but a younger guy makes a little more sense for them.

Kevin King’s exit from Green Bay was not pretty, primarily because he gave up huge catches at inconvenient times, but he was a solid player for the Packers. The Chiefs will get Trent McDuffie back very soon but you can never have enough quality cornerbacks in today’s NFL. McDuffie and L’Jarius Sneed will start once the former returns, and Jaylen Watson may continue the start for the rest of the year.

After those three, the Chiefs could look for an upgrade. Chris Lammons is a special teams ace but doesn’t play much defense. Joshua Williams is not quite ready for full-time snaps on defense. Rashad Fenton has been having a down season. Fenton is a pure zone cornerback and has always struggled in man, while King was solid in limited snaps in man coverage last year.

Kevin King is not a great cornerback but he does have the size (6’3, 200 pounds) and arm length (32 inches) that Fenton and McDuffie lack. If the Chiefs want to take another flyer on a veteran defensive back, King may be a solid option, but he has been very inconsistent throughout his NFL career.
