The KC Chiefs are currently in first place in the AFC West but are there any free agents available to sign that could them for the stretch run?

The Kansas City Chiefs are in the middle of another playoff race and are among the best teams in the NFL this season. Their offense has had its moments of brilliance but has also gone through several cold stretches. Their defense has been mostly solid but still needs to improve in certain areas to become Super Bowl-ready.

There are numerous players available to sign on the free-agent market that can contribute to the team for the stretch run, both on offense and defense. There are very few, if any, players available to sign off the street who are plug-and-play starters but there could be some diamonds in the rough.

Here are four free agents that can help the Chiefs this season:

Linval Joseph, Defensive Tackle

I wrote about signing Linval Joseph back in June and I still feel that it makes sense for KC. After losing Tershawn Wharton for the rest of 2022 with a torn ACL, the Chiefs are suddenly thin at the defensive tackle position. Chris Jones is elite, but Derrick Nnadi, Khalen Saunders, Taylor Stallworth, and Malik Herring don’t inspire a ton of confidence, especially when rushing the passer. If Jones were to miss any amount of time, Kansas City’s pass rush would be in a lot of trouble.

If the Chiefs want to add veteran depth off the street, a guy such as Linval Joseph could be a useful addition. Joseph is long in the tooth at 34 but was very solid for the Chargers last season rushing the passer. He wouldn’t be an every-down player, but if Kansas City is looking for quality depth behind Chris Jones, I would look into adding Joseph to the practice squad.
