Travis Kelce spoke about his recent contract restructure from the Chiefs on his podcast, New Heights, and wished for Odell Beckham Jr.

If you were among those wondering whether or not the announced restructure of Travis Kelce’s contract was a precursor to a forthcoming roster move, you’re not alone. Kelce says he’s also watching and waiting, hoping for a move by general manager Brett Veach to help the Kansas City Chiefs with his newfound cap space.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs announced a restructuring of Kelce’s current contract that freed up just about $3.5 million in salary cap space.

After the announcement, it wasn’t hard to find Chiefs Kingdom buzzing over the possibilities, but the truth is that the Chiefs likely just needed the extra cap space to operate through the rest of the year considering they only had a few hundred thousand dollars to work with before the reworked deal.

However, the NFL’s trade deadline is in less than two weeks which means teams must decide whether to buy or sell (or stand pat) by midseason. For the Chiefs, there are Super Bowl aims in the midst of something akin to a youth movement, which makes it hard to predict what the team might want to do. In short, if they wanted to do something, now is the time to make that space.

Back to Kelce. He recently launched a podcast, New Heights, in which he discusses all manner of subjects with his brother, Jason. Together, they cover a lot of NFL-related subjects and beyond and the platform gave fans some immediate and interesting insight into what might be happening. Yet as it turns out, Kelce himself says he’s not quite sure.

Jason Kelce starts the conversation by introducing the subject and asking what it means. Here’s the transcript from this section (which is short) of Episode 6 entitled “NFL Rivals, Brady’s Rant and Trade Talks”:

Travis: I’m not sure yet. It’s a start to a move, right? Like you’re freeing up cap space to be able to do something.

Jason: They could always just carry it over.

Travis: You’re not just kindly giving me the money up front, which I genuinely appreciate either way. But yeah, my agent just hit me up and said they want to free up some cap space. So I was like, ‘I get the money now? All right, I’ll do that. And it frees up cap space for us to get better as a team? I’m in.’

Jason: So you cannot verify or debunk the rumors out there surrounding OBJ?

Travis: Odell Beckham Jr?

Jason: That’s the OBJ I’m referring to.

Travis: I want them to come true. I haven’t heard anything. I have not heard anything in the locker room or anything around the facility. But something is in the air for sure, and if it means OBJ, all right.

So there it is. Kelce would love to see a move and he has a specific one in mind. At the same time, no one is sure what’s going on unless Travis is just toying with listeners somehow. At the very least, it makes things a lot more interesting knowing one of the Chiefs own stars would love to see another weapon added.
