What do the Kansas City Chiefs have in running back Wayne Gallman, the newest addition to the team’s practice squad?

On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs made a move to possibly bolster their running game if it becomes needed by signing 28-year-old running back Wayne Gallman to the team’s practice squad. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Gallman’s body of work, let’s take a look at what the 210 lb. back brings to the Chiefs’ backfield.

Despite having grown up in Loganville, Georgia, Gallman played his entire college career for the Clemson Tigers from 2013 to 2016. He would finish his 2015 season with 1,514 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, and follow that up with another strong performance in 2016 with 1,133 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.

After the 2016 season, Gallman decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2017 NFL draft, where he was drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round with the 140th overall pick.

Gallman’s career season up to this point came in 2020, where he would finish the season with 147 carries for 682 yards and 6 touchdowns along with 34 receptions for 193 yards and one receiving score for the Giants. Following that season, Gallman found himself swimming in the pool of free agency for the first time in his young career, when he was picked up by the San Francisco 49ers in April of 2021. Unfortunately he would not see any regular season playing time with the Niners for they released him on August 31 of that same year.

Gallman’s second stent in free agency was short-lived, however, as he was scooped up by the Atlanta Falcons only two days later. He remained with the Falcons until December of that same year before being released and claimed by the Minnesota Vikings. Gallman has been homeless since becoming a free agent again until now.

Gallman profiles as a tough runner who could help in short-yardage situations, where the Chiefs have had issues running the football in the past. He also has shown solid hands in the past. That said, fans aren’t likely to see much of Gallman, which is probably a good thing. If they did, it could be indicative of the current state of our stable of running backs.

However it works out, welcome to Kansas City, Wayne Gallman.
