Ronald Jones to get a chance

While the active players in the running backs room are certainly gifted in various ways, bringing different skills to the table for the Chiefs to utilize, there’s still a vital component missing within the mix. They lack the powerful runner between the tackles who can eat up yards, move the chains, and serve as a threat for defenses who want to leave the box light.

It also seems a bit odd that the Chiefs are having the short-yardage woes that they are in the first three weeks of the season, but even in goal-line situations, they’ve either been stopped up front or forced to resort to short passes in order to generate points. What better week for Ronald Jones to be given a chance, then, to make the leap from the team’s practice squad?

This spring, the Chiefs signed Jones to a near-minimum deal in free agency but the signing sparked plenty of buzz for the ways in which Jones’ powerful running style complemented the team’s needs. During the preseason, however, the Chiefs didn’t seem as enamored with Jones potential production after all, but he’s remained on the practice squad nonetheless.

The Chiefs are visiting Jones’s former team in Tampa Bay and that inner motivation could make him an exceptional play in the backfield for the Chiefs. Given that the Chiefs’ backs averaged less than 2.0 yards/carry a week ago, it’s clear that something needs to shift there. Part of that is o-line play. Some of it comes down to coaching. But it also might help to give Jones a chance to make a contribution.
