KC Chiefs vs. Colts predictions: AA staff picks for Week 3
By Scott Loring
Onto this week’s staff picks for the Week 3 game, where the Kansas City Chiefs are a whopping 5.5-point road favorites at the Indianapolis Colts.
As the 2-0 Kansas City Chiefs travel to Indianapolis to take on the 0-1-1 Colts, the history behind this rivalry hangs in the memory of long-time Chiefs fans. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes exorcised the demon by beating the Colts in January of 2019, but the storyline of “The Chiefs should beat the Colts” still causes veteran Chiefs fans to shudder. We won’t recap the gruesome history here.
The Arrowhead Addict staff has been utterly amazing at picking games this season, and as a group, we are completely undefeated. Everyone is 2-0. Last week’s big winner was none other than Ellen Mathis, who predicted a 27-25 Chiefs win (The good guys won, 27-24). Onto this week’s staff picks for the Week 3 game, where the Chiefs are a whopping 5.5-point road favorites at the Colts.
Patrick Allen (2-0)
The Chiefs offense looked great against the Cardinals but really struggled against a Chargers defense that could be one of the most formidable in the NFL when it is all said and done. I will cut the Chiefs a break here since they are still incorporating new pieces and hey, they won! Kansas City is a better team than the Colts and if they can contain Jonathan Taylor, which will be harder following the suspension of Willie Gay, they should sneak away with a road win here. The key will be to get an early lead to limit Taylor’s involvement.
Chiefs 24, Colts 17
Adam Best (2-0)
Matt Ryan is dusty, Michael Pittman is banged up, and the effing Jags just shut down Jonathan Taylor. The week before that, Indy tied the lowly (but pesky!) Texans. The Colts’ roster is mostly bereft of talent and has only been hyped up because their GM and head coach are respected. The Chiefs will dominate on both sides of the ball.
Chiefs 41, Colts 13
Matt Conner (2-0)
The Colts aren’t as bad as they look right now, but the Chiefs aren’t going to allow themselves to overlook any opponent at this point. The Colts are losing badly in the trenches against lesser teams, so the Chiefs should put up quite the fireworks display on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Chiefs 28, Colts 10
Bransen Gibson (2-0)
Kansas City has gotten off to a strong start, and I fully expect them to keep rolling this week. Coming off a mini bye and facing an Indianapolis side that has been woeful to start the season, I think KC’s offense will be far too good for the Colts.
Chiefs 31, Colts 21
Lyle Graversen (2-0)
The Colts aren’t going to completely lay an egg two weeks in a row, and Jonathan Taylor isn’t getting completely controlled two weeks in a row, either. I expect a much better offensive effort from the Colts this week, especially if Michael Pittman is back. They’ll keep pace with KC for a while, but eventually the Chiefs offense will pull away and KC’s defense will make enough stops to get the job done.
Chiefs 34, Colts 24
Anthony Hatton (2-0)
Some games are trap games. Not this Sunday. I think the Chiefs respect the roster in Indianapolis even though they’re winless. The Colts should try to play keep-away, which will only keep the score low for the first half. Ultimately, only one of these offenses can actually sustain drives on the ground and through the air.
Chiefs 30, Colts 16
Sterling Holmes (2-0)
Well, the Colts look bad and the Chiefs look great. Let’s not overthink this. Matt Ryan looks washed and the offensive line for the Colts doesn’t look as good as it used to. Chris Jones and company should dominate and I expect CEH to continue rolling offensively.
Chiefs 34, Colts 17
Scott Loring (2-0)
Jonathan Taylor vs. Nick Bolton will be a fun matchup to watch, and I cannot wait to see Chris Jones and George Karlaftis against an offensive line that has been playing much worse than they are capable of. The Chiefs will roar to an early lead and keep the Colts from relying on Taylor like they want to. Travis Kelce might go for 150 yards in this game.
Chiefs 29, Colts 9
Ellen Mathis (2-0)
The Chiefs are coming off a mini-bye and we all know that is when Andy Reid feasts. Not to mention the fact that the Colts are looking absolutely terrible. I anticipate this will be a bit of a whooping by the Chiefs and that Patrick Mahomes is benched in the third quarter.
Chiefs 41, Colts 13
Jacob Milham (2-0)
I am not falling for the trap game mentality. Will this be a guaranteed blowout? No. But, the Chiefs have surprisingly fielded a stout run defense. That will be put to the test against Indianapolis. But, Matt Ryan has struggled against sub-par defenses, while the Colts’ defense makes bad offenses look good.
Chiefs 31, Colts 20
KC Proctor (2-0)
After the Chiefs edged out an ugly victory in Week 2, I expect that the offense will be back on track in Indy. There’s no Bosa/Mack combo hidden on the Colts, and Pat will be back to business. Lots of folks out there calling for this to be a trap game… I’m not buying it.
Chiefs 30, Colts 17
Charles Robinson (2-0)
These two teams are heading in opposite directions out of the gates. The Colts, with high expectations coming into 2022, have floundered in their first two games as the league’s lowest-scoring team. I fully expect the Colts to give the Chiefs a much more competitive game than most think behind a big day from Jonathan Taylor, but Indy has not won a home opener since Peyton Manning was under center. The Chiefs win a closer-than-expected game to stay undefeated.
Chiefs 33, Colts 28
Lucas Strozinsky (2-0)
On one hand, Patrick Mahomes has destroyed Gus Bradley’s defense in the past, but this Colts group is more talented than the defensive personnel Bradley had in Las Vegas. On the other hand, the Colts have yet to play a quality game this season. It’s possible that they could give the Chiefs a fight to potentially save their season, but Matt Ryan has looked terrible, they’ve struggled in pass protection, and their pass rush has been atrocious despite the talent. Chiefs win, but it likely won’t be as pretty as fans would hope.
Chiefs 35, Colts 28
Grant Tuttle (2-0)
The Chiefs will roll against Indy. While the Colts have nice pieces on both sides of the ball, getting shut out against the Jags is… not how you want to play before you take on a juggernaut. Mahomes goes for 350 yards and Juju has a career day.
Chiefs 38, Colts 13
Farzin Vousoughian (2-0)
The Chiefs are one point shy of tying for the highest scoring team in the league through the first two weeks, while the Colts are last in that category. For those of you who don’t live in KC, don’t be surprised if you miss the final quarter when CBS swaps this game out for a more competitive one.
Chiefs 45, Colts 10
