Life without Willie Gay starts okay

The Chiefs came into this game knowing they’d be without their most well-rounded linebacker Willie Gay for the next four games due to a suspension handed out via odd timing from the NFL. Week 3 against the Colts was the first game for the Chiefs having to make due without Gay and fortunately the defense looked very solid all around for K.C., including right where Gay would have been in the heart of it all.

The Chiefs linebackers put up a solid performance in Week 3. Nick Bolton got his first career sack at a key point on Matt Ryan in the second half, but his production was to be expected. Beyond that, Darius Harris filled in for Gay and had an exceptional day. He finished with a team-leading 13 tackles for the Chiefs, but he also had a memorable hit on Jonathan Taylor for a loss in the third quarter.

The Chiefs certainly felt the loss of Gay on a few key plays on Sunday, especially in coverage, and they’ll welcome him back with open arms once he’s able to return. However, Harris is showing fans why the Chiefs held onto him since signing him as a rookie free agent since 2019. Given Leo Chenal’s presence as a rookie third-round pick as well, the Chiefs are loaded in the second level.
