Chiefs vs. Colts: Six frustrating takeaways from Week 3
By Matt Conner
Tackles are a real concern
The Chiefs offense never looked in sync for four quarters against the Colts on Sunday, and much of that had to do with the inability of the tackles outside to keep Mahomes from feeling under pressure on several key snaps on the day.
Andrew Wylie was dealing with a quick injury early in the game, so perhaps that explains some of the issues on the day. On the other side, however, the Chiefs should be getting much better play from Orlando Brown Jr. than they’ve been getting so far this year. On Sunday, he looked like his worst self yet.
The Colts defensive line is better than many fans realized coming into the game given their 0-2 start. Kwity Paye is a solid second-year player. DeForest Buckner is a menace inside and Yannick Ngakoue is the new pass rushing import meant to provide a boost. All three looked solid on Sunday against the Chiefs’ line. So some credit should go to Indy just for the talent they have up front.
That said, the Chiefs tackles simply have to play better going forward. On a day where mistakes were made and special teams gaffes were costly, the offense needed to overcome self-inflicted errors but instead they were without much momentum there as well.
