December 22nd 2013 — A 23-7 loss

Well, Reid’s first game against the Colts with the Chiefs feels vaguely reminicent of Reid’s very first game against the Colts overall. It was his first season with the Chiefs, similar to Reid’s first season with the Eagles. And just like Peyton Manning in his second season, Andrew Luck was in his 2nd season with the Colts. And just like their first matchup the game ended in a loss.

The most notable thing about this matchup may just be that it was a typical day for Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, who had 106 rushing yds. (8.15 ypc), 1 rushing TD, and 5 receptions for 38 yards through the air. In the years with Charles on the Chiefs, he was the engine for their offense and this wound up being the best year of his career.

January 4th, 2014 — A 45-44 loss

Perhaps the one game on this list most Chiefs fans would rather forget. I accidentally skipped over it entirely in my first draft of this article. This was the Chief’s second matchup of the season against the Colts. As many may remember the Chiefs bolted out to a 38-10 lead, it seemed like there was no way the Chiefs could lose this game.

After the Chiefs went up 38-10, the Colts would go on a run outscoring the Chiefs 35-6 in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Jamaal Charles was injured early in the game and was not available to help the Chiefs grind out the rest of the game. The loss ended a promising season for the Chiefs, the first of the Andy Reid-era in Kansas City. Thankfully, we now know more good seasons were to come, but at the time this loss was a gut punch.

October 30th, 2016 — A 30-14 win

The second of Reid’s wins against the Colts finally came in Reid’s third matchup against Andrew Luck. The Chiefs’ defense rattled Luck early and often, as they collected a total of 6 sacks and forced a fumble. On offense, quarterback Alex Smith started the game cold going just 9 for 19 before suffering a concussion that kept him out the rest of the game.

With Smith out the Chiefs backup quarterback Nick Foles stepped in led the Chiefs on 4/5 drives for a score (not including final kneeldown). Tight end Travis Kelce had just the 3rd 100+ yard receiving game of his career before later setting the NFL record with 4 straight later that season. This was Kelce’s true breakout season as he ended it with his first 1st team All-Pro selection.

January 12th, 2019 — A 31-13 win

Two consecutive wins! After going 0-3 in Reid’s first 3 matchups against the Colts Reid has now gone 3-2, and finally one is in the playoffs. This would end up being Patrick Mahomes one and only matchup against Andrew Luck, and Luck would have his second straight shaky performance against the Chiefs

The big story of this game was that this game was played in the middle of a small snowstorm and the question was could Mahomes continue his dominance in the cold? Well, while he did not have a passing touchdown, he did have a rushing touchdown and 286 total yards. The big performer for the Chiefs was running back Damien Williams who totaled 154 total yards and 1 rushing touchdown.

This was Mahomes’ first playoff win and a memorable one for the team.

October 6th, 2019 — A 19-13 loss

We’ve finally made it to the most recent matchup of Andy Reid and the Indianapolis Colts. Unfortunately, it is also Reid’s most recent loss against the team. Mahomes didn’t have a great day leading the team to just 3/10 drives for a score.

This game was the beginning of a rough patch for the Chiefs. After starting the season 4-0 the Chiefs went 2-4 over the next 6 games starting with this one. This was also defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s first season with the Chiefs.

Despite the fact the Colts only scored 19 points they were over the course of 5 drives out of 9 total. Longtime kicker Adam Vinatieri scored 13 of the Colts’ points with 4 field goals and 1 extra point. The top performer on offense for the Colts was running back Marlon Mack who totaled 148 total yards on 32 touches.

Conclusion

And with that, we’ve covered every Reid vs. Colts matchup, again overall Reid has a 3-6 record. Their most recent game ended in a loss, and Mahomes personally is 1-1 in his two games against them. Tyreek Hill did not play against the Colts in their previous matchup as he was injured, and the Chiefs won’t have him in this one as he is now with the Miami Dolphins.

The overall stats for this matchup are as followed:

  • Points for: 158 (22 pts/g)

  • Points against: 217 (29 pts/g)

  • 3-6 (Including 1-1 in the playoffs)
