Heading into Week 1, the Kansas City Chiefs were ranked as a top 5 team by virtually every media outlet. This led to a lot of eye rolls from Chiefs fans, including myself, who were quite confident that the Chiefs were better than just the top five.
Well, with week 1 in the books, we were right. The Chiefs went out and absolutely dominated the Arizona Cardinals in a 44-21 beatdown (and the game wasn’t even that close). The Chiefs looked better than ever and put the rest of the league on notice that they’ll be just fine without Tyreek Hill, and their new defense isn’t something to laugh at either.
The media took notice and rightly adjusted their rankings heading into week 2, placing the Chiefs at the #2 spot in nearly every ranking. The only other team ahead of the Chiefs are the Buffalo Bills.
Heading into Week 2 the Kansas City Chiefs are universally seen as the #2 team in the league behind only the Buffalo Bills.
According to Yahoo Sports, the Chiefs are their #2 team behind the Bills, with Frank Schwab taking notice of rookie running back Isiah Pacheco
"Rookie running back Isiah Pacheco, a darling of training camp and preseason, got some run late in Week 1 and ended up rushing for 62 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. If he keeps flashing like that, the Chiefs are going to have to expand his role."
For what it’s worth, I also noticed Pacheco’s star power as he put up more fantasy points in garbage time (while sitting on my bench of course) than Derrick Henry had the entire Titans game.
Over at PFT, they also have the Chiefs at #2, with Mike Florio having this take: “Anyone who was sleeping on the Chiefs is now wide-ass awake.” You finally got that right Florio. NFL.com also moved the Chiefs up 5 spots in their rankings to #2, once again behind only the Bills. They praised Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s new offense. They noted Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s debut performance and wondered if it was indicative of what his season will look like.
"“It took only one dominating performance to put the ghosts of the 2021 postseason in the rearview. The Chiefs are ready to roll.”"
Finally, CBS Sports took a similar line of thinking as the others, commenting that the Chiefs offense will be just fine without Tyreek Hill as they placed Kansas City just behind Buffalo.
The Bill did put on an impressive performance against the Los Angeles Rams last week, but it wasn’t nearly as dominant as the Chiefs win was. We could also look back and learn that the NFC West wasn’t as strong as everyone thought it might be. Still, Josh Allen being the “flavor of the season” media darling will probably put the Bills on top of the Chiefs for the foreseeable future.
At least none of them were dumb enough to rank the Chiefs as good as PFF thinks Patrick Mahomes is as a QB.
