Power ranking the Kansas City Chiefs’ position groups
3. Tight Ends
I almost put tight ends at number two but the Blake Bell injury changed things a little bit. I also feel that the number two group on this list is stronger from top to bottom. Travis Kelce is the best tight end in the NFL, Jody Fortson is one of the players that I’m most excited to watch this season as he could be a red zone weapon that the Chiefs seemed to have lacked in recent years, and Noah Gray should take a step forward heading into year two of his career. If/when Blake Bell returns from his injury, that will only strengthen the unit. The superstar factor of Kelce and the potential of Fortson are the primary reasons that this unit is one of the very best on one of the best teams in the NFL.
2. Interior Offensive Linemen
Outside of quarterback, there is no other position group that Chiefs fans should be more confident about than the interior of the offensive line. Trey Smith was an absolute steal in last year’s draft and played extremely well despite being a sixth-round rookie. Creed Humphrey was the best center in the NFL last season, per Pro Football Focus ($), while Joe Thuney was graded as the best pass-blocking grade guard in the NFL last year ($). It’s perfectly reasonable to say that Thuney, Humphrey, and Smith form the best guard-center-guard trio that the NFL currently has. Not to mention that Nick Allegretti is one of the better backup interior linemen in all of football. Depending on what the Chiefs decide to do with Darian Kinnard, he could see time at guard in case of injuries or in garbage time, and as previously stated, I don’t view him as NFL-ready enough to play either tackle position this year. Patrick Mahomes has to be thrilled with the unit that Brett Veach has assembled over the past two offseasons in a year where the Chiefs have to face Aaron Donald, Vita, Vea, DeForest Buckner, and Arik Armstead.
1. Quarterbacks
Let’s not waste a ton of time on this position. Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the sport and they could have me as their backup and I would still rank this group #1 on the entire team. Chad Henne is a decent veteran backup and Shane Buechele has the potential to be a high-end backup to Patrick Mahomes.
