“Russell Wilson and the Broncos look to take one step closer to clinching the AFC West as they welcome the Chiefs to Mile High.”

Do I believe this headline? No. I was simultaneously laughing uncontrollably while trying not to throw up as I typed it out. I deleted it several times. But the purpose of this is not to try to accurately predict what’s going to happen, it’s to generate some entertaining hypotheticals and discuss what they could mean for the Chiefs in 2022.

How awesome would this one be? Let’s be honest, with a last-place schedule and a much-improved signal caller in Denver, the Broncos do have a shot to have a pretty salty record the first time they see the Chiefs this year. There are some tough ones—49ers, Colts, at the Chargers, at the Titans, at the Ravens—but figure they win two of those. That puts them at 8-4, and in a wild AFC West, that’s probably going to be good enough to be at least within striking distance of first place. The Chiefs should be sitting in a similar position. Let me paint a little picture for you real quick.

The Broncos are in first or tied for first for the first time when it actually matters in like 7 years. Russell Wilson has come to town and rescued the Broncos! We’re back in Elway/Manning territory! Broncos fans are all over Chiefs fans, and for the first time since September 17, 2015, the Broncos believe they have a real shot to take down the Chiefs. When this game kicks off, it will have been over 2,900 days since the Broncos last beat Kansas City. The time has finally come.

Except it’s not quite that time. The Chiefs ride into town on the back of an extended win streak with their own 8-4 or better record. Patrick Mahomes is fully clicking with the new receiving corps and the young defense is flying around, forcing turnovers and getting to the quarterback. Russell Wilson throws a pick to Trent McDuffie on a late fourth-quarter drive and the Chiefs run the clock out to take a stranglehold on the AFC West and put the entire state of Colorado in a mental and emotional pretzel.

Let’s ride? Not today.
