9. The Jordan Lucas trade

Chiefs receive: S Jordan Lucas

Dolphins receive: 2020 seventh-round pick

Safety Jordan Lucas was not a game-changer for Kansas City, but he still got a Super Bowl ring with the team.

Lucas was the Miami Dolphins’ sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and was on the roster bubble in 2018. He hadn’t started a game for the Dolphins and only played 25 defensive snaps in 19 games. Lucas’s value came on special teams, where he was a reliable player. The Dolphins were likely to cut Lucas, but the Chiefs sent a 2020 seventh-round pick to acquire him.

Lucas had a far larger role in Kansas City, both on special teams and defense. In 2018, he appeared in 16 games while starting four of those for the Chiefs, who had a revolving door at the safety position. He logged his only NFL interception and sack with the Chiefs, taking advantage of the opportunity in front of him in K.C.

Lucas wasn’t more than an important depth piece during his time in Kansas City, but getting that for a very late seventh-round pick is worthwhile. Ultimately, this was a move contributing to the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl, so chalk it up as a Veach win.
