Offensive line

The offensive line is no longer a rebuilding project or an offensive liability. But, Chiefs fans know how important offensive line depth is when needed.

Beyond the top six offensive linemen, things seem unsettled for the Chiefs ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. Guard Nick Allegretti’s job is safe, as he has been a reliable interior option during his time in Kansas City. After the Chiefs released Johnson, tackle Geron Christain’s job was very safe as well. He has swing tackle potential and had some first-team offense reps during this year’s training camp. But after them, it all comes down to preference and in-house confidence.

Rookie Darian Kinnard came in with high expectations, with Veach explicitly eyeing him as a right tackle. But, Kinnard has arguably been this Chiefs rookie class’ biggest letdown. He has not stood out much during preseason games and only saw second- or third-team reps during training camp. The Kinnard hype got carried away before training camp, but his roster spot is not secured at all.

Tackle Prince Tega Wanogho has been a fringe 53-man roster player for his entire Kansas City tenure. He was a very raw prospect but has taken noticeable steps forward in his game. Due to his boom-or-bust outlook right now, Wanogho is not a roster lock. But, his playing both at left tackle and right tackle certainly elevates his status.

Finally, Austin Reiter feels like the odd man out in Kansas City, simply because of his low ceiling. Rookie Mike Caliendo has been the better center during the 2022 preseason, but Reiter has the starting experience that Caliendo does not. One could make the roster over the other, simply due to age or experience. Or, neither could make it because neither has been exceptional this year.

There are many ways the Chiefs can go about offensive line depth. There is no more uncertain position group heading into Tuesday’s deadline.
