2. Bryan Cook

One of the most promising of the five rookie defensive backs on the Chiefs, Bryan Cook, had a big night on Thursday against the Packers.

Coming out of the University of Cincinnati, Cook was lauded as a big hitter, but he has proven throughout the preseason to have great awareness as well. He has consistently taken advantage of his opportunities to fill in as the nickel back and has impressed in supplemental coverage on a regular basis.

The highlight of his preseason came with time expiring in the first half on Thursday when he picked off Jordan Love and had a 30+ yard return.

The void that Tyrann Mathieu left behind in the safety room can be viewed as either a big pair of shoes to fill or an opportunity for a new star to emerge. Juan Thornhill has set high expectations for himself and Justin Reid brings a veteran presence to the field, but if Cook can continue to grow throughout the season, he may be the most likely candidate to replace Mathieu’s production.

One interception off of a backup quarterback in the third preseason game of the year likely won’t earn Cook starting honors to begin the year, but he is well on his way to playing a significant role on this defense.
