The Bears were hoping they’d solved their issues at center—and they are major issues—with the signing of Lucas Patrick in free agency to a two-year deal. The Bears were familiar with Patrick as a former member of the rival Green Bay Packers and his presence in the middle of a stout interior offensive front with Cody Whitehair and Michael Schofield would help protect Justin Fields going forward. Unfortunately for the Bears, Patrick has been out with a hand injury and head coach Matt Eberflus has said he’s going to need surgery which will keep him out for an indefinite period of time.

The Bears used a sixth-round pick on Doug Kramer who got to stay home as an Illinois product, and he’s splitting reps with last year’s starter Sam Mustipher, who was properly relegated to a backup role. That’s a tough way to enter a long season, especially one as limited in talent surrounding Fields.

This is where Austin Reiter comes in. The Chiefs brought back Reiter this offseason after a year away, and he’s currently slotted in as the backup center behind Creed Humphrey. However, the Chiefs also have Nick Allegretti who could slide over to play the center role and even Joe Thuney could as well.

Given that Reiter was the starting center for the Chiefs for two seasons in which they went to the Super Bowl, Poles would be very familiar with what he could bring to the roster. If nothing else, he could provide a veteran safety net and championship experience to a young offense in need of both.
