Four Chiefs players who could be trade targets for Bears
By Matt Conner
Roderick Johnson
It wasn’t that long ago that Roderick Johnson looked like an important piece of the offensive front for the Chiefs this season. He was taking first-team reps at left tackle next to Joe Thuney while his competitors sat on the bench and Orlando Brown Jr. remained at home due to a holdout.
Fast forward a bit and Johnson’s role has changed a bit in camp. Geron Christian is starting to earn more reps himself as a potential swing tackle, which is why the Chiefs signed him in free agency in the first place. Brown is back and entrenched in his familiar role. Andrew Wylie has the right side locked down for now with Darian Kinnard as the fifth-round rookie understudy behind him. Then there’s also Lucas Niang ready to upset the depth chart on the right side when he’s healthy and ready. That right there is one more mouth than the Chiefs can retain on the active roster, which means that either Christian or Johnson are looking like the odd men out.
The Bears might be set at tackle but it’s hard to tell at this point. Teven Jenkins’ stock is all over the board and seems to be trade fodder more than anything else. Sam Braxton has taken over the left tackle role as a fifth-round rookie, which shifts Riley Reiff to the right side and Larry Borom to swing tackle. If Jenkins goes, there’s definitely a need for someone else.
Johnson can play both sides and is earning reps at each side even this preseason with the Chiefs. Depending on how the Bears feel internally about their tackle options and what they do with Jenkins, a trade could be a smart play.
